The South African rugby lock Bakkies Botha has been suspended for nine weeks for head butting New Zealand's half back Jimmy Cowan, during the Tri Nations series opener in Auckland last night.

The All Black coach Graham Henry says he's not surprised by the length of the ban, because Botha has a previous record for similar offences.

The All Black coach Graham Henry says he's not surprised by the length of the ban as Botha has a previous record for similar offences and is probably lucky he didn't get more than nine weeks.

Graham Henry says the All Blacks work pretty hard on their discipline, so giving away 12 penalities to five was a bit frustrating, but it's good none involved retaliation in response to foul play.
