The Cambridge middle distance runner Nikki Hamblin's set a New Zealand women's 1500m record at an athletics meeting in Belgium.

Hamblin shaved three tenths of a seconds off Toni Hodgkinson's ten year old New Zealand national record in finishing third in, four minutes five point nine-three seconds.

Hamblin who was born in England, gained New Zealand citizenship a year ago, says she didn't think the record was on after the first lap, as there was a lot of pushing and shoving.

She sat towards the back of the field and then started picking runners off from about 600m out.

Hamblin says going under four minutes six seconds will help her gain entry to major races.
