Herbert stays on to avoid a repeat of the mistakes of 1982

The All Whites coach Ricki Herbert says a desire to ensure the mistakes of 1982 weren't repeated in New Zealand football, played a large part in his deciding to remain in New Zealand.

Herbert, who led the All Whites unbeaten through the world cup, has extended his contract with the A-League club the Wellington Phoenix for a further two years, taking him through to 2013.

He says he'll also stay on as national coach through until the next world cup in Brazil in 2014.

Herbert says he had offers from clubs in Europe, Asia and Africa.

But he says the failure of New Zealand football to capitalise on the All Whites 1982 world cup efforts means he wants to be around to make sure there's no repeat of that.
