Storm salary cap breaches almost double initial estimates

The Melbourne Storm's salary cap breaches are almost double the amount the National Rugby League originally estimated, says the chairman of the club's major shareholder News Limited.

An audit commissioned by News Ltd and conducted by accounting firm Deloitte has found the NRL club's breaches tallied almost $4 million from 2006 until the end of this season.

Initial predictions of the breaches were about $2 million.

Storm chairman John Hartigan says it identified 13 current or former players who received third party payments in breach of NRL regulations.

He says there's no evidence that players knew of the breaches but is disappointed current players refused to co-operate with the investigation.

Hartigan says the report's finding will be referred to the police.
