New Zealand's Sam Warriner has won her third half Ironman this year finishing 13 seconds clear of Australia's Kate Major at Racine in Wisconsin.

The Whangarei triathlete has now finished on the podium in her last five races in the United States as she prepares for the half Ironman World Championships in November.

Warriner says she knew she had to establish a lead heading onto the run and was 15 seconds clear of Major after the 1.9 kilometre swim swim.

She extended her lead to three minutes after the 90km the bike leg which was just as well as she faded late in the 21km run after being ill last week and Major got to within 20 metres of her with a kilometre to go.

Warriner now returns to camp in Los Angeles to build up to her first attempt at a full Ironman distance race on September 12.
