First top 10 world championship finish for NZ open water swimmer

The New Zealand swimmer Cara Baker has finished ninth in the 5 kilometre race at the Open Water World Championships in Canada.

It is the first top 10 finish for a New Zealand open water swimmer at the World Championships.

Swimming New Zealand 's Open Water coach Phillip Rush says Baker's done well at her first world championship and only her fifth open water swim after her win in the Australian Championships.

He says she was the top Commonwealth swimmer and with Alannah Jury getting back to full form after illness New Zealand has the seeds of the start of an internationally competitive open water programme.
