All-rounder Jesse Ryder's failure to keep up a recovery programme on his injured elbow, has cost him his place in the New Zealand cricket team's upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

Ryder injured ligaments in his elbow before the World Twenty20 tournament in the West Indies in April and still cannot throw without pain.

Coach Mark Greatbatch says Ryder's 80 percent fit and while he might be fit in three weeks time it's not soon enough.

Greatbatch says Ryder struggles to maintain his fitness when he's not in the team environment.

He says he doesn't want to be too critical but Ryder needs to take responsibility for himself as a professional athlete and as an adult.

The Black Caps leave for Darwin on Friday, where they'll spend a week training in the heat and humidity to prepare for Sri Lanka.

They'll play a tri series also involving India, in Sri Lanka with the first game on August 10th.
