An eight-strong badminton team has been named to represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in October.

The four men and four women are a new generation of athletes set to follow in the footsteps of top Kiwi badminton players Sara Runesten-Petersen and Dan Shirley.

The men's players are Joe Wu of Auckland, James Eunson of Southland, Henry Tam of Auckland and Oliver Leyden-Davis of Waikato... while Donna Haliday of Auckland, Anna Rankin of Southland, Danielle Barry of Auckland and Michelle Chan of Auckland make up the women's team.

The New Zealand badminton players will compete in both team and individual events. Final combinations are yet to be confirmed.

Runesten-Peters and Shirley are New Zealand's most successful badminton athletes winning one silver and three bronze Commonwealth Games medals each between Manchester 2002 and Melbourne 2006.

New Zealand has been competing at the Commonwealth Games since Kingston, Jamaica in 1966 and has won a total of eleven medals in the sport.
