There's been a gold medal for New Zealand at the World Junior Championships at Moncton in Canada with 15-year-old Jacko Gill winning the shot put.

Gill's winning throw of 20.76 metres was 56 centimetres further than Bozidar Antunovic of Serbia.

He also set a world age group record and improved on his New Zealand under 19 and under 18 records of 19.92 metres, set in Christchurch in March.

Gill's coach is Didier Poppe, who became the world and olympic shot out champion Valerie Vili's new coach in April.
