The Sri Lankan spin bowler Muttiah Muralitharan has ended his test cricket career with 800 wickets, taking the final wicket with the last ball of his career as Sri Lanka cruised to a 10-wicket victory over India in the first test in Galle.

The final stages of the weather-interrupted test belonged to Murali who ended India's second innings in typically flamboyant style, becoming the first bowler to achieve 800 test wickets.

38 year old Murali's unique feat, which is unlikely to be matched, was greeted by fireworks, and he was carried from the field shoulder high by his teammates, with his family cheering from the stands.

Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapakse flew to Galle from the capital to watch the final stages of the match, and he presented Muralitharan with a memento during the lunch break.
