The Wellington Phoenix have beaten top Argentine football club Boca Juniors 2-1, in Wellington.

The match was the third and final game in the Wellington club's pre-season build up to the A League competition which kicks off next month.

While Boca played with more freedom and creativity in the opening stages it was the home side who scored first with new striker Dylan McAlister putting the home side ahead one-nil midway through the first half.

There was plenty of niggle in the game and that continued into the second half, when Phoenix captain Andrew Durante scored, nodding in a header from a free-kick.

Durante also got Bocca on the board with an own goal ten minutes from full time.

Frustration got the better of Boca captain Christian Cellay and he was sent off late in the game after receiving a second yellow card.

The Phoenix opening A League is against Gold Coast in three weeks time.
