Man Utd to try for long-term tie for Rooney

English football giants Manchester United are planning to sign their star striker Wayne Rooney up to a lucrative new contract, even though his current agreement has two more years to run.

United's chief executive David Gill says it is clear the club and player are both very keen to secure his long-term future at Old Trafford.

Gill also announced the Serbian defender Nemanja Vidic has agreed a new long-term contract of his own.

Vidic was repeatedly linked with a move away from United over the last year and it was reported that Real Madrid was ready to launch a bid for him.

It is believed United don't usually negotiate new contracts until there is only one year left but that the rule has been changed to keep Vidic, and soon Rooney, happy.
