Comm games organisers under pressure

With barely 80 days to go in the countdown to the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, the Indian capital still resembles a giant construction site, with mounds of debris surrounding dug-up roads and walkways across the crowded city.

A downpour in the crowded city yesterday turned many of the construction sites into a sea of mud, and India's former Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiya said he hoped monsoon rains would derail efforts to have everything ready on time.

The ruling Congress Party MP argues that money spent on the games should have been channelled into sports facilities in deprived areas of the country.

The New Delhi Games are already the most expensive in history, with an infrastructure and organising budget of 2.7 billions dollars.
