De Villiers job safe for now

The Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has the backing of the South African Rugby Union, after a meeting following their dismal start to the Tri-Nations.

SARU president Oregan Hoskins says they had an informal chat and intend to have a full review with de Villiers next week.

Hoskins says they'd normally only have a review at the end of the Tri-Nations series, but this time they saw the need to have one in the middle of the competition given the gravity of the situation.

Hoskins says De Villiers' job is safe despite calls for him to be axed following the 32-12 and 31-17 losses to the All Blacks and a 30-13 defeat by Australia.

He says it's important that you don't change management at this stage, although it is certainly a grave situation.

The Springboks returned from Australia this week to newspaper stories alleging there was a split between De Villiers and assistant coaches Gary Gold and Dick Muir over the team's style of play.
