Southland too good form Manawatu

6:49 am on 1 August 2010

Southland's beaten Manawatu 37-23 in their provincial rugby championship match with both sides making the most of a sunny but breezy afternoon in Palmerston North to try to run the ball as much as possible.

Southland led 19-9 at half-time, after tries to left-wing Mark Wells, number eight Elliot Dixon and prop Jamie McIntosh.

Halfback Scott Cowan got the bonus point try early in the second spell but the hosts were unlucky to concede a fifth when Southland's first-five James Wilson lost the ball over the line.

Halfback Aaron Smith and centre Hadleigh Parkes replied with well-taken tries for Manawatu.

However missed tackles and handling errors cost the home side any chance of a win.
