The first round of rugby's provincial championship has ended with wins to Auckland, Wellington, Waikato, Counties Manukau, Southland and Northland.

But the defending champions Canterbury drew at home to Hawkes Bay after starting the last two seasons with losses,

Wellington wrapped up the weekend with a three tries to one 20-11 win over Tasman on a wet windy night in the capital after Auckland's 36-14 bonus point win over North Harbour in Albany.

Southland warmed up for Saturday's Ranfurly Shield challenge from Otago with a bonus point win over Manawatu in Palmerston North.

But Otago had no answer to a resurgent Counties-Manukau, the Steelers starting strongly with a bonus point home before Waikato narrowly defeated Bay of Plenty in Hamilton.

And Northland began with a win over Taranaki in New Plymouth.
