De Villiers cleared of misconduct

The Springbok coach Peter de Villiers has been cleared of misconduct for hinting that referees were biased toward the All Blacks to boost attendance at the World Cup.

SANZARs' Judicial Officer Jannie Lubbe SC heard the complaint on Friday.

It followed de Villier's comments on an Australian television programme after two Springboks were sin-binned and cited in consecutive weeks.

De Villiers said he had own observations about the defeats in New Zealand but couldn't discuss them publicly.

But then he said with the World Cup in New Zealand next year and maybe it was the right thing for them to win so they could attract more people to games.

However Lubbe decided, on balance of probability, that didn't breach SANZAR's code of conduct because de Villliers never mentioned or referred to referees or match fixing.

SANZAR's making no further comment.
