The disgraced former world champion American sprinter Antonio Pettigrew has been found dead in his car.

Pettigrew was 42 and had been working as an an assistant athletics coach at the University of North Carolina.

The county sheriff said there was evidence he'd taken sleeping pills.

The 1991 400 metres world champion was a member of the American relay team which won the gold medal in Sydney in 2000.

The International Olympic Committee stripped Pettigrew and his teammates, including Michael Johnson, of their medals after he admitted to doping during the perjury trial of former coach Trevor Graham.

Pettigrew never tested positive but accepted a two year ban after he acknowledged using EPO and the human growth hormone HGH.
