India's PM intervenes to make sure Commonwealth Games go ahead

India's prime minister has intervened to rescue the troubled Delhi Commonwealth Games.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has created a ministerial committee to oversee the Games which start in the Indian capital on October 3rd, amid widespread corruption claims and concern Games facilities will not be ready for the sporting event.

The committee is charged with ensuring all tasks are completed before the Games and has also pledged "severe and exemplary" punishment of those involved in any corruption.

The prime minister says while the organising committee remains in charge of the Games it now has to contend with daily oversight of the ministerial committee.
