The New Zealand triathlete Aaron Barclay has won gold today at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
The 17-year-old from Riversdale in Southland is the first New Zealander to win a medal at the inaugural games.
He was in the leading bunch after the swim and was first off the bike before clearing out from an American Kevin McDowell on the run to win in 54 minutes 41 seconds.
He says front-running tactics were a key because he didn't know the other competitors before the race so he had to be aggressive.
Barclay' s competing in Thursday's mixed event with team-mate Maddie Dillon.
