Ricco fled to dodge drugs test, says agency

The Italian rider Riccardo Ricco tried to avoid the doping test that revealed traces of the banned blood-booster EPO during the Tour de France.

Ricco tested positive for EPO after the fourth stage of the three-week race, a time trial in Cholet.

The head of the French Anti-Doping Agency says that when Ricco saw he was to be tested, he ran away but was caught by the race stewards between two cars.

The AFLD President Pierre Bordry says they then told him that as he had tried to avoid the test, he would be tested every day.

Ricco was kicked out of the race when the results of the test were revealed last week and his Saunier-Duval team left the Tour.

Bordry has not ruled out further positive tests in the Tour de France but says he believes cycling would be cleaner after the race finish in Paris.

Three riders - Spaniards Manuel Beltran and Moises Duenas and Ricco - have failed dope tests for banned blood-booster EPO since the start in Brest earlier this month.
