Better return than Athens but no medal count says SPARC head

Predicting just how many medals New Zealand will win at the Beijing Olympics is not a game the head of the country's sports funding agency SPARC is about to play.

The Beijing Games which start in just over two weeks will provide New Zealand with a better haul than Athens but just how much better is not something Miskimmin wants to predict.

New Zealand athletes won five medals - three gold and two silver four years ago but all Miskimmin will say, is that based on the lead up to these Games there should be a greater haul.

He says eleven New Zealand athletes are currently ranked in the top three of their event compared to less than half that going into the Athens Games.

And don't bank on an Olympic bolter, the days of someone bursting onto the scene are gone says Miskimmin with results indicating an athlete needs to have finished in the top eight or better if they're to make the Games podium.
