Atherton slams Harmison recall

6:01 am on 29 July 2008

The former England captain Michael Atherton has blasted the England selectors for recalling fast bowler Stephen Harmison for the third cricket Test against South Africa, starting tomorrow night at Edgbaston.

The Durham pace bowler has been recalled to liven up an attack that couldn't prevent South Africa piling up over 500 at Headingley, where the Proteas won the second Test by 10 wickets to go 1-0 up in the four-match series.

Harmison returns to the squad of 13 in the latter part of his international career which has been characterised by repeated criticisms of his performance and attitude.

Atherton says his selection sends a terrible message, but it's difficult to see him making the playing eleven anyway, barring a string of injuries.
