Swifts too clinical

The NSW Swifts have won the inaugural Trans-Tasman netball championship, winning last night's Grand Final in Sydney against the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic 65-56.

The Swifts led by as many as eight goals in the first two quarters, but the Magic made their move in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to just two points.

But the Swifts, led by an exceptional performance from their captain and Player of the Final Catherine Cox, remained cool under pressure and drew away to win by nine.

The Magic's Irene van Dyk produced the shooting stats of the match with 45 from 46.

Rain prevented a hopeful world record crowd of more than 14,000 but 12,099 packed into Sydney's Acer Arena.

Next door at the ANZ Stadium the National Rugby League match between the Bulldogs and St George Illawarra drew a crowd of under 8,000.
