IRB says it won't get involved with Sonny Bill Williams issue

The International Rugby Board says it will not intervene if the rugby league player Sonny Bill Williams breaks his four-year contract with the NRL team the Bulldogs in Sydney.

Williams left Australia over the weekend and is reportedly to have a three million dollar contract with second division rugby union club Toulon.

The Natonal Rugby League boss David Gallop has pleaded with the IRB to block the move but the head of communications Greg Thomas says nothing will be done, because Williams is switching from league to union.

He says it would be the same if an athlete were switching from any other sport, such as boxing: the IRB only has jurisdiction in rugby.
