Chinese doping chronology embarrassing blow for hosts

China will be seeking to avoid a repeat of the drugs scandals when the Olympic Games open in Beijing a week on Friday.

But two of its athletes have been banned for life for doping offences in the past month.

It's an embarrassing blow to the host nation, which has had it's share of major doping scandals, starting with seven swimmers and four other athletes testing positive for synethetic testosterone at the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima.

China was stripped of nine of its 23 gold medals and four years later four of its swimmers failed pre-competition doping tests before the world championships in Perth.

In 2000 the controversial coach Ma Junren and six of his distance runners were dropped before the Sydney Olympics after blood tests showed abnormal results.
