NRL boss says the NRL salary cap will stand up to legal challenge

The National Rugby League boss David Gallop says he's confident the league's salary cap policy will stand up to a legal challenge.

It's believed that Sonny Bill Williams will counter legal moves by the Canterbury Bulldogs with a claim that the NRL's salary cap amounts to a restraint of trade.

Williams left the Bulldogs without telling his club that he was planning to break his contract to join the French rugby club Toulon.

Gallop says the salary cap is a key component of the NRL competition and without it there would be a lop-sided competition with some clubs under pressure to survive.
