One of New Zealand's greatest sportswomen, Bessie Fullerton-Smith, has died in Marton aged 101.

Born in Manawatu in 1907, Bessie Gaisford was a true all-rounder, becoming a champion golfer in the 1930s, a star horse rider, and an accomplished tennis player, netballer and gymnast.

She was made a life member of New Zealand golf in 1965, and was awarded the MBE for her services to equestrian sport.
