A top basketball referee in the United States has been jailed for 15 months for being at the centre of a betting scam involving matches in which he officiated.

Former National Basketball Association official Tim Donaghy has admitted taking payments from gamblers in exchange for inside information, and to betting on games he was refereeing.

Reaction to his sentence in America was mixed, with some saying he could have got 33 months and others saying he was made an example of and should have only got six months.

The relatively light punishment reflected Donaghy's cooperation with investigators.
