No women in Saudi Olympic team

The International Olympic Committee's strategy of creating opportunities for women in sport is having little effect in Saudi Arabia.

When the Saudi Olympic team appears in Beijing next month there will be no women in the line-up.

The lack of women is apparently due to opposition by powerful clerics to women's participation in sport.

The head of the Saudi delegation said now was not the time for the Saudi authorities to consider allowing women into sport.

Saudi Arabia will participate in five sports - athletics, shooting, swimming, weightlifting and equestrian events - but aren't saying how many athletes will attend the Games.
