New Zealand football teams head for Olympic bases

The New Zealand under-23 men's football team has lost a pre-Olympic game against Honduras 3-1 in Beijing.

On the plus side it was New Zealand coach Stu Jacob's first chance to mould Blackburn Rovers captain Ryan Nelsen into the line-up.

The Oly Whites used the three 30-minute periods of play to try a number of player combinations.

Today the Oly Whites and the New Zealand women's side will leave the Olympic Village for their respective bases in readiness for their Beijing campaigns, which begin next Wednesday.

The New Zealand men's side has an opening Olympics match against China at Shenyang next Thursday.

The women's team head to Qinhuangdao for their first match against Japan next Wednesday.

While the football teams depart, the New Zealand women's basketball team has arrived along with the remainder of the shooting and weightlifting team, while the men's hockey team have arrived from Hong Kong.

The rowing squad are now well set at their venue, 30km out of Beijing at Shunyi, and are into their schedule of twice-daily training sessions,

with their competition beginning next Saturday.
