Nadal closes after defeating Haas in Cincinnati

The world number two Rafael Nadal has beaten the German Tommy Haas in straight sets, 6-4 7-6 at the Cincinnati Masters to continue his relentless climb to the top men's tennis ranking.

Roger Federer may be just a few days away from losing his world number one spot.

The Swiss's four and a half year reign is in danger after a three-set defeat to Croatia's Ivo Karlovic saw him exit the Cincinnati tournament.

Federer's 11th loss of the season - his first against Karlovic in seven matches - has opened the way for his Wimbledon and French Open conqueror Nadal.

If the young Spaniard wins the tournament he will take over as the world's top-ranked player.
