Gallop softens stance on Williams

NRL chief executive David Gallop has softened his stance on Sonny Bill Williams returning to play in Australia, saying the renegade backrower would be welcomed back if he apologised.

The Bulldogs star is believed to be making his way to Toulon to meet with officials over a lucrative rugby union deal, but Gallop says the door remains open for a return to the NRL.

Gallop says he would like to understand why Williams has done what he has done but if he apologised the NRL would hear him out.
