The Real Madrid striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has retired from international football.

The Dutch FA says the 32-year-old has decided he can no longer perform to his best for both club and country.

The former Manchester United striker won 64 caps and scored 33 goals after making his debut in 1998.

Van Nistelrooy joined United from PSV Eindhoven in 2001 and moved to Madrid two years ago.
