New Zealand begins Olympics with traditional strong codes

New Zealand's Beijing Olympic campaign will begin with its traditional strong codes to the fore on the first full day of competition.

The equestrian team, spearheaded by veterans Mark Todd and Andrew Nicholson, will compete in the dressage in Hong Kong.

The powerful rowing contingent will have opening heats while the swimmers, yachties,shooters and badminton players will have first hit outs.

The New Zealand women's basketball team will take on Mali and the New Zealand women's soccer team will face Norway.

Cyclist Julian Dean will head the New Zealand charge in the men's road race.
