American swimmer Michael Phelps has set a world record to win the gold medal in the men's 400 metres Individual Medley at the Olympic Games in Beijing.
Phelps who is chasing eight gold medals at these Games finished in a time of 4 minutes, 3.84 seconds to win the first gold medal of the swimming event by almost three seconds.
Phelps held off the challenge of Hungary's Laszlo Cseh (Chay), who won the silver medal and fellow American Ryan Lochte (Loch-tee) who took the bronze.
