NZ women's hockey team beaten by Japan

5:56 pm on 10 August 2008

The New Zealand women's hockey coach Kevin Towns says they only have themselves to blame following their 2-1 loss to Japan in their opening match at the Beijing Olympics.

Against the run of play, Japan went 2-nil up early in the match, before the Blacks Sticks converted a penalty corner just before half time.

The New Zealanders had double the scoring chances than Japan and also failed to convert from 2 penalty corners in the last 2 minutes.

Towns says Japan's first goal was from a mistake by them, while the forwards didn't make enough space in the scoring circle when they were on attack.

However he feels any side can beat any other in their group and feels they're not out of it yet.

New Zealand play Germany on Tuesday.
