Wellington and BoP unbeaten in Air NZ Cup

6:34 am on 11 August 2008

Wellington and Bay of Plenty are the only two unbeaten sides in rugby's Air New Zealand Cup provincial competition after two rounds, with Wellington leading the championship with 10 points after two bonus points wins

At the other end of the table rugby heavyweights Waikato and North Harbour are the only teams not to have won a game.

Auckland got their campaign underway with a three try to nil 22-6 win over Taranaki at Eden Park on Sunday, in a game which was also a Ranfurly Shield Challenge.

After the big upsets of the first round the second round was much more predictable with just Tasman's 16-14 win over Waikato being a surprise.

Hawkes Bay and Northland played out a thriller in Napier with both sides picking up a try scoring bonus point as the Bay won 45-31.

However, while Tasman and Northland are both tied for third on the championship table there is likely to be bad news for them on Tuesday when New Zealand Rugby announces the two sides to be culled form the competition next season in a cost cutting move.

In other games at the weekend Counties Manukau after their shock win over Auckland last week were 45-3 losers to Bay of Plenty while Southland were18-5 winners over Manawatu and Canterbury beat Otago 20-13.
