Black Sticks lose again

9:26 am on 13 August 2008

The New Zealand women's hockey team almost pulled off an upset win over world number 3 Germany at the Beijing Olympics, but conceded two late goals to lose 2 - 1.

Krystal Forgeson put the Black Sticks ahead when she scored from a penalty corner in the first half and until the last 12 minutes of the game the New Zealand's defence was impenetrable.

But a controversial goal from the Germans then evened the score, despite an appeal from the Black Sticks over interference, and in the last minute the champions scored again.

The Black Sticks captain Lizzy Igasan says they knew it was not going to be the cleanest of games but it's not the reason they lost.

The Black Sticks, who lost to Japan in their first match, and will now play Great Britain tomorrow.

Meanwhile China, one of the favourites for a medal, stayed on track for the semi-finals with a 3-0 win over South Africa.
