Michael Phelps became the first Olympian to win 10 career gold medals when he triumphed with a new world record time in the men's 200 metres butterfly in Beijing.

New Zealand's Moss Burmester set a new New Zealand and Commonwealth record but finished fourth equal, two point three two seconds back, with China's Wu Peng.

The victory was Phelps' fourth in a row at this Games, and his fourth straight world record, knocking point zero six of a second off his old benchmark

Hungarian Laszlo Cseh took the silver medal and Japan's Takeshi Matsuda the bronze.

Phelps has the chance to continue his gold rush when he takes part in the 4x200 metres shortly.
