Man City home shock, Villa win in UEFA Cup

English football clubs had a bittersweet night in the second-tier European UEFA Cup as Aston Villa won in Iceland but Manchester City lost to FC Midtjyllandat at home.

City lost 1-0 and now face a tough task to qualify for the first round. They'll have to make up that ground in the second leg of their second qualifying round game in Denmark in a fortnight's time.

The new Manchester City manager Mark Hughes felt his side lacked match fitness.

Aston Villa had a good game at FH Hafnarfjordur in Reykjavik as Gareth Barry, now cup-tied for the Champions League should he move to Liverpool before the transfer deadline in a fortnight, got his name on the score sheet in their 4-1 win.
