New Zealand's first-ever whitewater kayaker at the Olympics came close to a place in the semi finals.

Nineteen-year-old Lukka Jones was eliminated after missing one clean gate at the Shunyi canoeing park.

The English-based Tauranga paddler suffered a hefty penalty count from the first of two qualifying heats, ending her hopes of making the top 15 for a place in the semis.

And despite a faultless second run, the 71st world-ranked paddler finished last in the 21-strong field.
