Willis tipping an upset and hopeful it'll be him

8:54 am on 15 August 2008

The glamour Olympic track and field programme starts tonight in Beijing with the men's 100 metres heats while New Zealand runner Nick Willis, the Commonwealth Games 1500 metre champion, has the heats of his event tonight.

The semi-finals are tomorrow and the final's on Tuesday.

Willis made the semi-finals in Athens but says this year his chances are much better.

The last time there was an upset in the 1500 metres was at the Barcelona games in 1992 when Spaniard Fermin Cacho triumphantly won in front of his countrymen.

And Willis says he's aiming to be the one to cause an upset in Beijing.

He says the field is so evenly matched that around a dozen runners could be medal contenders.
