First throw kills off shot put opposition

5:54 pm on 17 August 2008

The New Zealand shot-putter Valerie Vili feels her first throw set the tone for her victory at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Vili threw a personal best of 20 point 56 metres in her first throw and her opposition never got close with the two Belarussians filling the minor placings.

Vili says she wanted to put a big one out first up and put the pressure on the rest of the field and it worked.

She says her series of throws, which were all over 20 metres, were the best of her career.

The now world and Olympic champion, was lost for words to describe how she felt afterwards, but did says she's now achieved what she wanted to.
