Ashley was confident of gold in Beijing

The New Zealand boardsailor Tom Ashley says he was confident of winning gold in Beijing but kept his thoughts to himself.

Ashley finished third in the RSX medal race but it was enough to win gold by a point from the Frenchman Julien Bontemps with Israel's Shahar Zubari third in what the Kiwi described as a very tough week.

Ashley says he went to Beijing with gold on his mind, but didn't tell anyone in a tactical move.

He says it's easy to tell everybody what you're going to do but if you fail you look like a bit of an arse - but if you keep it to yourself it also takes the pressure off.

Veteran boardsailor Barbara Kendall finished sixth in the women's event.
