Americans looking hard to beat in basketball

8:31 am on 21 August 2008

The unbeaten United States basketball team continued their relentless quest for gold in the men's Olympic tournament, crushing Australia 116-85 in the quarter-finals in Beijing.

After the American Kobe Bryant's game-high 25 points, the Lakers forward was magnanimous about the Australians' performance.

Bryant says the Boomers played tough, executed extremely well and cutting without the ball and the US had to adjust after a halftime team talk.

Argentina are likely to prove the first real test for the Americans in the semi-finals, after the holders were squeezed by Greece 80-78, while Spain and Lithuania also advanced.

Argentina beat Greece 80-78, Spain beat Croatia 72-59 while Lithuania beat China 94-68.
