Afghans rejoice at Olympic medal

5:46 am on 22 August 2008

The winner of Afghanistan's first Olympic medal is to be given a house as a reward on the orders of President Hamid Karzai.

Rohullah Nikpai thrilled Afghans with his bronze medal in the men's 58kg taekwondo.

Many Afghans were unable to watch the bout live because power is intermittent and only some households have access to cable television.

Sitting on the floor of the family home, Nikpai's 73-year-old mother wept as she described her joy at hearing her son win.
