Phoenix lose to Victory

5:59 am on 25 August 2008

The Wellington Phoenix 4-2 loss to Melbourne in round two of Australian football's A-League leaves them at the bottom of the ladder without a win.

Just over 6000 fans saw the home side start well on a wet night only to see a low shot slip under keeper Glen Moss in the 16th minute.

Shane Smeltz got the Phoenix back on level terms in the 29th minute when he headed home a precision Tony Lochhead cross.

But the Victory scored just before and just after half-time and after that the Phoenix were always

playing catch-up.

Smeltz gave the Phoenix a sniff with a penalty in the 64th minute but the Victory skipper Kevin Muscat nailing his side's fourth goal from the spot only a minute later.
