South Africans question funding after Beijing flop

9:13 am on 27 August 2008

South African Olympic chief Moss Mashishi says his country's single medal at the Beijing Olympics has put the issue of funding firmly in the spotlight.

South Africa sent their largest-ever squad of 135 athletes to Beijing but came away with only a silver won by long jumper Khotso Mokoena, leaving the country joint 71st in the final medal table.

Mashishi says what's important is what they do to support the athletes, and they must start now for the London Games in 2012.
