Gough gets another medal for New Zealand

There was one more medal in the luggage of the New Zealand Olympic team when they arrived back in Auckland on Wednesday, after the track cycling pursuit team were given an extra bronze for non-podium cyclist Wesley Gough.

Gough competed in the record-breaking qualifying heats but Hayden Roulston took his place in the bronze medal race-off against Australia.

Only the four who rode against Australia for the bronze initially received medals but Bike NZ approached the International Olympic Committee for a medal for Wesley after discovering there were precedents in both cycling, for team heat riders, and in swimming relays.

The IOC accepted the argument and Gough was presented with his bronze at the final New Zealand team party in Beijing.
